Wind chaos hits Luxembourg (video)
Extremely strong winds up to 110km hit Luxembourg on Sunday causing damage and uprooting trees.
The strongest winds so far this winter were recorded in Luxembourg on Sunday in the storm that swept across Euope named "Xynthia". In some cases at 110km per hour according to weather experts. Just to put that into perspective, the level of a hurricane begins at about 117km per hour!
As the country was swept with the high winds, by 11:30am the Fire and Civil Defence departments had already been called out some 100 times to deal with emergencies such as falling and uprooted trees, damaged roofs, flying scaffolding and other emergencies.
On several routes trees have fallen across the roads and in two cases cars have been hit and injured the occupants. The police advised to avoid driving where necessary. The region of Müllerthal has been the hardest hit and most treacherous.
The police pointed out that the emergency number 112 is available but have pleaded to use it only in absolute emergency.
